End quotas that block new farmers

Phase out the paid right to produce milk, poultry and eggs. Keep food safe. Price a fair changeover and review import rules too.

Our planUpdated:

Our argument

Food safety should be a standard you meet. The right to farm should not be an asset you have to buy. We want to end paid production rights with a fair, priced changeover.

What must change

Phase out the paid right to produce milk, poultry and eggs. Keep food safe. Price a fair changeover and review import rules too.

What a win looks like

New farmers can enter without buying quota. Safety stays. The public knows the cost of the change.

Public cost

We have not yet priced this ask for the public purse. Any public aid must be priced before we seek funds for it.

The evidence

C-E01

Canada’s farm council says supply management sets output and prices and controls imports.

Limits: The page covers five groups of farm goods. It states the government’s reasons for the system. It does not measure the extra cost to shoppers or prove prices are fair.

C-E02

Some imports face lower duties up to a set volume and usually higher duties above it.

Limits: These import limits are not the same as the rights farmers buy to produce food here. Check the rules and rates for each product.

Studies and notes

No case study is published here yet. This is the next question to check.

What we need to check

Check quota prices, food prices and farm debts. Compare phase-out plans and who pays for each one.
