The cleanup bill and the cash held are different.

Read each figure with its date, scope and limits.

Updated:

This is about the Alberta oil sands mine program in the cited report. It is not a total for all Canadian oil and gas sites.

Keep the dates in view

The Alberta audit reports about C$51.9 billion in estimated mine cleanup costs for 2024. It reports about C$1.8 billion in security held as of September 2025. These figures have different dates.

The gap is not a proven tax bill. It is not an annual cost. It does show why cleanup rules need a hard look.

Our ask

Publish costs, funds held, work done and the basis for each estimate. Show who would pay if a firm fails. Have an outside expert check the plan.

Do not add wells and pipelines to this mine figure without separate records. Do not call cash spent on cleanup a complete measure of the harm left behind.
