End the cap and tariff on cars made in China. Let cars that meet sound safety rules reach buyers.
Our planUpdated:
Our argument
A good car should win buyers on price, quality and service. We want safe Chinese electric cars here. A cap on their numbers shields sellers from rivals. Buyers deserve a wider choice.
What must change
End the cap and tariff on cars made in China. Let cars that meet sound safety rules reach buyers.
What a win looks like
More safe cars to choose from, with no quota or tariff based on where they were made.
Public cost
We have not yet priced this ask for the public purse. Any public aid must be priced before we seek funds for it.
The current quota offers 24,500 vehicles, plus unused space from the prior period. It runs from September 2026 to February 2027. Covered imports need permits and face a 6.1% duty.
Limits: This is the second part of the quota year, not a monthly cap. It covers listed vehicles made in China, not all Chinese brands. Makers or their agents can apply. The old 100% surtax ended in March 2026. Safety rules still apply.
The federal EV rebate requires a car made in Canada or a country with a free trade deal with Canada. The price cap is $50,000. Cars made in Canada have no price cap.
Limits: Other rules also apply. The country test leaves China-made cars out. It turns on where a car is made, not the brand name. Ending this test would not make every car eligible.
Compare real models, range, cold-weather use, repairs and full Canadian prices. Check each import gate and who can use it. A low price abroad is not a Canadian quote.
