Our argument
A tariff is a tax on goods brought into Canada. It can raise costs for buyers and for firms that need parts or tools. We want better deals and stronger firms. A tax wall is a poor way to get either.
What must change
End tariffs that protect firms from rivals. Show the full border bill and the cost of each change.
What a win looks like
Safe goods enter without a tax meant to make local rivals look cheap.
Public cost
We have not yet priced this ask for the public purse. Any public aid must be priced before we seek funds for it.
The 2026 tariff lists an 18% duty for cotton T-shirts under item 6109.10.00 at its standard trade rate.
Limits: Some trade deals and other listed rates lower the duty or make it zero. This is one item, not all clothes or all imports. The rate applies to customs value, not the store price.
An IMF study links higher tariffs to less output over time. It also finds less output per unit of work. The study covers 151 countries.
Limits: It spans many places and years. It does not price Canada’s current trade walls. The authors test several methods. One study cannot settle every case.
Price cars, clothes, home parts, food and clean-power tools. Record the exact item, country, date, duty and extra charges. Track lost tax revenue apart from gains to buyers.
