How to read this chart

The source has new sales and net sales. We take one off the other to find the sum paid back. Each year needs all four quarters.

What this does not show

This is not all public debt paid back. These sums leave out interest.

  • This covers bonds classed as issued in international markets by public bodies based in each country. It is not all public borrowing. It is not all bonds held abroad.
  • Repayments here are principal, not interest.
  • Repayments are new sales less net sales. We leave out a year if that sum is below zero in any quarter.
  • A year appears only when all four quarters are reported. A missing quarter is not zero.
  • Yearly mean rates give an estimate in the chosen unit. This is not a sum of each day’s converted value.
