Let buyers choose safe electric cars.

Price lists abroad show more choices to study. Canada should test safe cars by clear rules, then let buyers choose. A foreign price alone cannot tell us the Canadian cost.

Updated:

Dated price records, not current matched quotes. The cost exercises leave out major costs. They cannot show a Canadian sale price, savings or why a brand is absent.

The choice we want

Buyers should be able to choose safe cars on price, range, quality and service. We oppose a tariff or quota that shields a seller from a safe rival. Keep the same clear safety rules for all cars.

What the prices show

An October 2026 report lists Canada's Model 3 Premium RWD at C$39,490. A May report lists the US trim with that name at US$42,490. At our October exchange rate, the older US price is about C$59,898.

Dates, trims, taxes and fees differ. These records do not prove a current price gap for the same car, or show how much of a gap comes from trade rules.

A cost exercise is not a car quote

An MG4 price list in China starts at ¥65,800, about C$13,884 at our exchange rate. Adding an assumed 6.1% duty and C$1,200 to C$3,500 in freight gives about C$15,931 to C$18,231. That is only a cost exercise.

No Canadian quote. It leaves out approval for sale, port and broker fees, changes to the car, warranty, sales tax and seller margin. The freight range is an assumption from other routes. It cannot establish a sale price or savings.

Read the quota in vehicles

The report of October 9, 2026 shows 15,931 vehicles against a first-year quota of 49,000: about 32.5%. The affordable-car reserve is due to start in year two, not year one.

Vehicles, not permits: one permit can cover more than one car. The first-year notices use first come, first served, with scope to set aside space for makers or new entrants. This snapshot does not show why a brand is absent.

A corrected comparison

Our October exchange rate puts the older US Model 3 Performance price range at about C$76,815 to C$77,519. The Canadian record is C$74,990, which is lower. These prices do not verify where that car was built or the tax it bore.
